Some exit, broader than the main road, steals me away. A sign says FRESH COFFEE. The parking lot is deserted. The cafe is empty. I sit down, place Anne Sexton's Live or Die in front of me like a place mat. The lucky green Heineken pen clipped on the cover for notes. A breasty waitress comes over. She’s tall, had hope once and lost it. But there's gratefulness, even eagerness in the way she moves toward me.
